A Hearthstone company - serving Freeport, NY

Famco Fireplace Services Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

How Famco Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

  • Famco direct-vent gas fireplaces (DV series): intermittent pilot failure. The SIT valve and pilot assembly on DV units from the early 2010s collect condensation salts faster than other brands because of the way Famco routes the vent intake across the firebox top. We see this constantly in Freeport’s salt-air climate, especially within a mile of the water. We replace the pilot with an OEM SIT 0.983.512 or a Robertshaw equivalent rated for coastal humidity, then reseal the intake hood with high-temp silicone.
  • Famco wood-burning inserts (Model 44 and 49): cracked refractory panels. These units run hot and the rear panel cracks diagonally after 8-12 seasons of heavy use. The factory panel is ceramic fiber; we source the identical Famco spec from Copperfield or, when the owner prefers, upgrade to a higher-density HeatShield refractory mix that lasts longer and costs less than OEM shipping from the Midwest.
  • Famco B-vent gas log sets: delayed ignition and soot rollout. The ceramic burner ports on Famco’s 18-inch and 24-inch sets clog with spider webs and dust - more common in Freeport’s mature-tree neighborhoods where spiders overwinter in vent terminations. We pull the burner, clean every orifice with a numbered drill bit set (never a wire brush, which enlarges the port and throws the flame pattern), and test gas pressure at the valve with a manometer.
  • Famco fireplace dampers: corrosion seizure. Famco’s cast-iron throat dampers in pre-fab metal fireplaces rust solid after twenty years of Long Island humidity, especially in homes without chimney caps. We don’t force them - that snaps the frame. We cut the damper out, install a Gelco top-sealing damper with a stainless cable, and cap the chimney with a Famco-compatible Gelco cap to stop the water that caused it.
  • Famco vent-free gas units: ODS (oxygen depletion sensor) nuisance shutdown. The ceramic ODS on Famco vent-free logs gets dust-fouled and shuts the unit down at normal oxygen levels. Freeport’s older homes with tighter replacement windows make this worse - less infiltration air, more false trips. We clean the ODS with compressed air and a soft brush, check room volume against NFPA 54 requirements, and replace the sensor only if cleaning doesn’t hold.

Our Famco Fireplace Services Process

  1. 1
Call and schedule. A live person answers, asks the model number if you have it, and books a window. We confirm with a text the day before.
  2. 2
Arrival and diagnostics. Our tech arrives in a marked truck, uniformed, background-checked. We inspect the Famco unit, run a combustion analysis on gas models, and photograph any damage or wear.
  3. 3
Plain-English verdict and upfront price. We show you the photos, explain what’s wrong, and give you a written estimate. The number we quote is the number on the invoice.
  4. 4
Parts decision. If we need parts, we explain OEM versus quality aftermarket (DuraFlex, HeatShield, Gelco, Copperfield) and what’s warranty-safe. You decide. We stock common Famco parts; others we source same-day from our Long Island supplier.
  5. 5
Repair and test. We complete the work, test every function, check gas pressure and draft, and clean the work area. No debris, no dust.
  6. 6
Documentation and guarantee. You get photos, a written summary, and our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If it’s not right, we make it right. No paperwork, no arguing.

What Famco Fireplace Services Costs in Freeport

Famco pilot assembly replacement $280 - $390
Famco refractory panel replacement (insert) $340 - $580

Why Freeport Homeowners Call Hearthstone Chimney Co. for Famco Work

We’ve worked on Famco units in Freeport for over 42 years - long enough to know which parts interchange with HeatShield and Gelco, and which ones need to be exact OEM. Russell Haines and our crew don’t guess. We document every inspection with photos and a plain-English verdict, back every job with the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing, and answer the phone with a live person 24 hours a day.

Our technicians are background-checked, uniformed, and carry the professional-grade brands that actually fit Famco specs: DuraFlex for liners, HeatShield for refractory, Gelco for dampers and caps, Copperfield for panels and doors. Most jobs complete in a single visit. No surprises on the bill. If the flue’s not right, the fire’s not right. It’s that simple.
