Copperfield Damper Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Copperfield Damper Repair: The Freeport Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Copperfield-compatible damper repair assemblies in Freeport, with most jobs running $280-$520 installed depending on whether we’re replacing the plate, the frame, or the full throat assembly. Our trucks carry the common Copperfield sizes, so we can usually match your model without a second trip. If the flue’s not right, the fire’s not right. It’s that simple.

Most Freeport homeowners figure out their Copperfield damper has failed on the first cold night in November, when they open it and feel cold air pouring down anyway, or when they shut it and still smell smoke the next morning. The damper plate warps, the pivot pins corrode in our salt-air climate, or the cast iron frame cracks after twenty years of heating and cooling. We’ve replaced dozens in the older homes near the Freeport Recreation Center, where the original Copperfield throat-mount dampers from the 1980s and 90s are finally giving out.

Which Copperfield Models This Applies To

Copperfield built throat dampers under several series names over the years, and the parts are not interchangeable between them. The most common we see in Freeport are the Copperfield Standard (rectangular plate, 8″ x 8″ up to 13″ x 13″), the Copperfield Lyemance (top-sealing with silicone gasket, chain-operated), and the older Copperfield Cast Iron throat frames with integrated side pins.

To identify yours, look up inside the firebox throat with a flashlight. Standard series plates carry a stamped “CF” and the nominal flue size on the handle bracket. Lyemance units have a brass chain guide and a domed plate that seals upward against the flue opening. Cast iron frames usually have no visible marking except a part number cast into the right-side pivot boss, which we can cross-reference. If the plate is rusted past reading, measure the throat opening width and depth, and note whether the pivot pins enter from the sides or drop through the top.

We install OEM Copperfield replacement parts where they’re still manufactured, and where they’re discontinued we use quality aftermarket equivalents from Gelco or Olympia Chimney that match the original specs. The aftermarket plates are typically 304 stainless rather than black iron, which holds up better against the damp salt air coming off Freeport’s south shore.

Signs Your Copperfield Damper Repair Is Failing

  • Cold downdraft even when “closed.” The plate has warped or the frame has spread, leaving a gap along the edge. In Freeport’s coastal climate, thermal cycling plus humidity accelerates this. You’ll feel it as a persistent chill from the fireplace even with the damper handle fully shut.
  • Smoke smell in the house the day after a fire. A damper that won’t seat fully lets warm house air rise past it, carrying residual soot odor into the room. This is often the first symptom owners notice, and it means the seal is already compromised.
  • Handle turns but the plate doesn’t move. The pivot pin has sheared or the linkage has corroded through. On Copperfield Standard units, the right-side pin takes all the torque and is the usual failure point after fifteen to twenty years.
  • Visible rust flakes or orange staining on the firebrick. The plate is shedding oxidation, which means the metal is thinning. Once pitting starts, the plate will warp within a season or two. We’ve seen this advance faster in homes within a few blocks of the water.
  • Rattling or chattering when the wind blows. The plate has cracked or the pivot pins are loose in their bosses. This is past the point of adjustment; the assembly needs replacement before the plate drops into the firebox entirely.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Typical Range
Copperfield damper plate replacement (plate only, frame sound) $280-$380
Full throat assembly replacement (plate + frame + pins) $420-$520
Lyemance top-sealing damper conversion $480-$650
Level-2 camera inspection with photo report Included with repair

The spread depends on three things: whether we can reuse the existing frame, how accessible the throat is through your firebox opening, and whether the flue tile above needs any mortar touch-up while we’re there. We price it upfront after looking, not after starting. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice. Every damper repair carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. You can verify the symptoms yourself: flashlight up the flue, check for daylight around the plate edges, work the handle and watch whether the plate moves smoothly through its full range. What you should not do is attempt to remove a seized cast iron frame or drill out corroded pivot pins. The throat area is tight, the metal is heavy, and a dropped plate can crack firebrick or damage the flue liner below. We’ve been called to fix DIY attempts that turned a $340 plate replacement into an $1,800 liner job.

Our technicians carry Copperfield-compatible plates and frames on the truck, background-checked and uniformed, and most damper swaps in Freeport finish in a single visit. Call (631) 735-5125 and a live person will pick up, any hour. We’ll schedule a look, give you a flat price, and if you want to move forward, we usually have the part.
